Today is St. Patrick’s Day, a day to “celebrate Irish culture” that is in reality probably just an excuse to generalize Irish culture (leprechauns, potatoes, the color green) and call drinking Guinness an exercise in cultural appreciation. I’m as guilty as the next guy; we’ll be having some Bailey’s Irish Creme (creamer) in our coffee and some corned beef for dinner, and with that in mind I’d like to take a minute to acknowledge the silliest of the Irish comic characters, Banshee. A grown man who flies by yodeling, Sean Cassidy joined the X-Men in Giant Size X-Men #1, serving as “token Irish”, and bringing with him the illustrious background characters of Siryn and Black Tom Cassidy. Of course, because Ireland’s not that big, he’s also tight with the Irishest mutant expert you’ll find, Moira MacTaggart.
Here, we see what Banshee’s powers turn into in real life from X-Men First Class.
And Black Tom Cassidy and his magic stick show up in the internet-classic I’m The Juggernaut Bitch (shot in dazzling 24p).
And Ireland also produced my favorite old school wrestling video podcast, OSW Review! If you want to watch Irish blokes commentate on wrestling with some cutaway jokes and an obsession with candy bars, oh man, you should give this a try (no really, you should. It’s good.)
Until next time, as Google Translate always says…
